What I Help With:
Experience and interest in working with a range of general mental health challenges including stress and anxiety, symptoms of depression, interpersonal challenges, thoughts of suicide, stress related to work, grief and loss, addictions, issues related to parenting, managing transitions, living with the stress of our current sociopolitical context, and those wishing to improve their overall wellbeing. I have a special interest in working with members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their families.
Therapeutic Approach:
Relational counselling with influences from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Solutions-Focused Social Work, Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Interventions and The Gottman Method for working with couples. All therapy is tailored to meet the needs of the individual; every person is understood in the context of their environments, taking special care to include systemic and other environmental factors in both our understanding of the problem and the steps we take toward change.
About Me:
My name is Kristen and I am a registered social worker with both a bachelor's and a master's degree in social work from Memorial University. I am currently working toward a PhD in social work and in addition to working with Power Counselling, I also teach at Memorial's School of Social Work. I have been practicing social work for 15 years and am eternally grateful for the work I am able to do, and the relationships I have been able to form.
I have worked in diverse practice areas which have provided me with the knowledge, skills and compassion needed to create meaningful, therapeutic relationships with people. I believe in the value of showing up as my genuine self in sessions with you. My approach is client-centered; I bring a variety of tools to the table, and I believe that you do as well. Our work together will be collaborative, and goal driven.
When I am not working or studying, you'll find me taking joy in the little things: a hot cup of coffee and a good book, quiet time at home, moving my body, being in nature, connecting with friends and family and spending time with my senior pup.
